Explanation
を除いて is used to say that something is true for all things except the thing specified. It highlights an exclusion from a statement or general situation. It’s common in written or formal contexts and can be used for people, objects, or circumstances. It can also imply that the excluded item is not included in the consideration being discussed. Note that this pattern usually attaches to a noun; for verbs or clauses, other forms like excluding by verb or using 〜を除けば are used.
Examples:
- 彼を除いて全員が出席した。 → Everyone attended except him.
- この本を除いて、他の本はすべて売れてしまった。 → With the exception of this book, all other books have sold out.
- 交通費を除いては、費用は変わらない。 → Excluding transportation costs, the total price is unchanged.
- 彼を除いては誰も賛成しなかった。 → Except for him, no one agreed.
