Explanation

あげく expresses that after a long or repetitive process, the result is often unsatisfactory or disappointing. It highlights the speaker’s sense of weariness or dissatisfaction with what happened after many efforts or extended circumstances. It is used to connect a sequence of events with a concluding, often negative, outcome. It is common in personal reports and news-like narratives; the clause before あげく describes the effort or situation, and the following clause (often negative) states the result.

長い間調べたあげく、原因が分からないままだった。

ながいあいだしらべたあげく、げんいんがわからないままだった。

After a long investigation, we still couldn't figure out the cause.

彼は何度も練習したあげく、試合に勝つことができた。
