Noun + まで
Meanings
- Until
- Till
- To (but no further than)
About this pattern
Explanation
Noun + まで marks the limit or end point of something. It indicates that something continues up to a certain noun, and cannot go beyond it. It is used with times, places, quantities, or spaces to show the boundary. It can express events ending at or stopping at that point, and can also describe a range that ends at that noun (inclusive). Note that まで is different from までに, which refers to a deadline for completing something before that point. Examples: 1) 学校は5時までです。 The school is open until 5 o'clock. 2) この列車は新大阪まで行きます。 This train goes as far as Shin-Osaka. (to Shin-Osaka) 3) ここまでで終わりにしましょう。 Let’s finish here. (up to this point) 4) 今日はここまで読んだ。 I’ve read up to here today.
