Explanation
以前 is a time-related noun/adverb meaning “before” or “in the past.” It is used to refer to a point in time earlier than the current or another referenced moment. It often appears in written or formal contexts, and it can set up a contrast with the present or with what followed. Do not confuse with “not even” or “far from,” which are not conveyed by 以前. For actions, you may use 以前に to indicate something done before another action, or 以前から/以前は to express a state or situation that has existed since a past time or in the past. When contrasting with the present, 以前は/以前から often imply a change or difference from now. In conversation, 以前 can stand alone as a noun/adverb, or pair with は/は not to emphasize a topic. 以前に is more formal and frequently seen in written Japanese or careful speech.
