Explanation

This is the negative form of う-verbs (words whose dictionary form ends with -う). To form it, drop the final -u and add -ない, with the appropriate sound change. It expresses present or future non-action (I won’t do X / I don’t do X). It is commonly used in casual speech and informal writing. Note: some common irregulars in this group are excluded here (e.g., 行く is irregular in its negative form: 行かない).

私は牛乳を買わない。

わたしはぎゅうにゅうをかわない。

I won’t buy milk.

彼は新しいゲームを買わない。

かれはあたらしいゲームをかわない。
