About this pattern
Explanation
べき expresses a normative recommendation or obligation. It conveys what someone believes is appropriate or proper in a given situation. It is stronger than a simple suggestion but softer than a direct command. The nuance is often personal or communal expectation rather than a legal requirement. Use it when giving or judging what should be done in a general sense, in advice, or in self-reflection. In formal writing, you may also see べきだ framed with である (Nであるべきだ). For negative expectations, べきではない/べきじゃない expresses what should not be done.
