な-Adjectives
Meanings
- Adjectives that can function as nouns
- Adjectives that are used like nouns when describing people or things
- Names of quality that can modify nouns with な
About this pattern
Explanation
Na-adjectives describe qualities that can act like nouns and then modify other nouns or form predicates. They behave like adjectives but also behave like nouns in certain contexts. Use the な particle when a na-adjective modifies a noun directly (静かな公園 = a quiet park). For predicates, conjugate as だ/です in plain or polite speech (静かだ, 静かです). To negate, use ではない/じゃない (静かではない, 静かじゃない). To modify a verb, convert the na-adjective to an adverbial form with に (静かに話す). Examples: 静かな部屋が好きです (I like a quiet room); 部屋は静かだ (The room is quiet); 部屋は静かではないです (The room is not quiet); 彼は静かに話す (He speaks quietly).
