About this pattern
Explanation
たい expresses the speaker's desire or wish to perform the verb. It is attached to the stem of the verb in the ます form (for godan verbs) or directly to the verb stem for ichidan verbs. It mainly conveys a personal wish and is used in informal everyday speech; in more polite contexts, add です or あります (e.g., 食べたいです). To negate, use 〜たくない. To talk about past or unfulfilled desire, use 〜たかった or 〜たくなかった. It does not indicate actual action by itself; it only states a wish.
