About JLPT Lab

A free, comprehensive study platform for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test — built for serious learners preparing for N5 through N1.

What is JLPT Lab?

JLPT Lab is a free online study platform for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT). It brings together vocabulary, grammar, example sentences, audio, and a built-in spaced-repetition (SRS) flashcard system covering levels N5 through N1.

Our goal is simple: give serious JLPT learners a single place to study, look things up, and review — without paywalls on the core reference material.

What you can do here

JLPT Lab is built around a few connected tools, rolling out in stages:

  • Browse and search a comprehensive vocabulary and grammar database, organised by JLPT level — with curated example sentences and audio.
  • Review what you’ve learned with a built-in SRS flashcard system powered by the FSRS algorithm (for registered users, coming soon).
  • Read curated articles and study guides written for each level (coming soon).

Why we built it

Most JLPT resources fall into two camps: shallow free sites that cover only a few hundred entries, or deep paid apps locked behind subscriptions. We wanted a third option — comprehensive, free, and built around the way people actually study for a fixed-date exam.

JLPT Lab started as a personal study tool and grew into a public platform. It is developed and maintained by a small independent team in Taiwan.

Where the data comes from

JLPT Lab combines original content with established open Japanese-language datasets:

  • Dictionary entries are derived from the JMdict and JMdict_Extended projects, maintained by the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group. These projects are licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike.
  • Grammar explanations, example sentences, articles, audio, and the overall organisation of content are produced by JLPT Lab.
  • Some content is generated or edited with AI assistance and reviewed before publication.

How JLPT Lab makes money

JLPT Lab is supported by display advertising (Google AdSense). We may introduce optional paid features in the future, but the core reference material — vocabulary, grammar, articles, and SRS — will remain free.

We do not sell your personal data. See our Privacy Policy for details on how we handle information collected through the Service.

Not affiliated with the JLPT

JLPT Lab is an independent study resource. We are not affiliated with the Japan Foundation, Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES), or any official JLPT examining body. All trademarks and certification standards belong to their respective owners.
