JLPT Level: N1
Meanings
Just, Merely, Simply, Only
Usage
Explanation
~たまでだ is used to emphasize that the situation or outcome is nothing more than what has been stated. It expresses a modest or resigned conclusion and is often used to justify, downplay, or end a discussion with the sense “that’s all there is to it” or “it was simply because of that.” It can convey a sense of “that’s all I can say about it” or “it’s all because of X, and nothing more.” Typical contexts include explanations after a minor incident, accepting responsibility without over-claims, or ending a line of reasoning with a narrow, limited conclusion.
He was late simply because the train was late.
The failure was just due to a lack of practice.
The cause of this problem is merely my mistake, and nothing else—it's my responsibility.
